Grandpa Fergie was cool. But us kids were kind of scared of him. His
manner was kind of gruff and abrupt with us, but even after growling
at one of us kids, you would always catch him sneaking you a smile!

He lost two fingers on his left hand to a dynamite accident while
constructing a cesspool on the Big Island. This didn't stop him from
playing the ukulele, playing Japanese "Yako" card games and working
with his home-made bench grinders and polishers to make coconut bowls
and jewelry in his spare time.

He worked in the cane fields on the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island
as a sugar "luna" or supervisor over field workers. He rode a horse
and carried a whip! He spoke English, Portuguese and Hawaiian.

They lived in Papaaloa, Laupahoehoe, Hawaii until the late 50s or
early 60s, when they moved to 1952 Dole St. in Honolulu while their
youngest son, Robert, attended University of Hawaii.

He died of a heart attack in his sleep.

"Pop" Fergie loves the outdoors. Since we were little, Pop loved to
take us fishing, camping, hiking and hunting. He never lost that love
and today, at 70 years of age, he hunts at least once a week with his
friend Myles
and thier bevy of dogs. They catch wild pigs quite often and smoke
the meat for family and friends. They have been honored as the
"Hunter of the Month" by their hunting club for catching the largest
pig of the month. Pop's favorite dog was named "Fergie." Pop had been
offered $2000 for her but refused. She was a sweet dog, but
tenacious. She was known to find the pig long after the other dogs
had given up and returned to the hunters. She was put to sleep in
1992 because of medical complications. Pop loved this dog because of
her sweet disposition, yet tenacious character .. the very qualities
that describe Herman "Pop" Fergie!

though she knew she had cancer for a year-and-a-half before her
death.

Pearl Rose Fergerstrom, a tireless supporter of the Hawaii Youth
Symphony Association and longtime Waimalu School employee, died April
12. She was 63.

She was the mother of Blaine Fergerstrom, webmaster of
starbulletin.com, the Star-Bulletin's on-line edition.

Born Pearl Rose Chung and raised in Kalihi, "Ma" Fergerstrom grew up
with a "rascal streak," flouting convention by running for the title
of "Miss China" in the late '40s and joining the Civil Air Patrol in
1951.

Through the years, she was active as a Cub Scout den mother and with
the Waimalu PTA. She was also co-owner of Oz Video in Waimalu, served
as eucharistic minister for St. Elizabeth's Church and sang in the
church choir.

In between all that, she found time to baby-sit grandchildren, become
an accomplished seamstress, shuttle her children to countless
extracurricular obligations and help out with school functions, said
son Blaine.

Fergerstrom also is survived by husband, Herman A. Fergerstrom; sons
Kelan, Ermin and Garen; daughters Janel Walsh, Dore Weber and Leann
Antonio; mother, Florence Chung; brothers, John Chung Jr. and Jimmy
Chung; sister, Betty Carvalho; and 13 grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 22 at St. Elizabeth's
Church, 99-310 Moanalua Road, followed by Mass and viewing until 9
p.m. Friends may call again at the church from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday
April 23 for Rosary and prayer service.

Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe. Aloha
attire.

Hi Blaine -

I hope this finds you well. Michael, Olivia, and I are doing well.
I don't know if you know that we are expecting another little one
this June. We'll certainly have our hands full. How about you? How
is the family? We wish we could be in sunny Hawaii right now -
fortunately for us, the cold weather is finally passing and it looks
like spring is finally here! At any rate - Leslie had another little
girl, so I wanted to pass on her information for the genealogy.



She had a little girl, named Alisha Grace Anand, born March 3, 2003,

Victor Harold Fergerstrom Sr., 76, of Hilo, a retired heavy equipment
operator, died last Saturday in Hilo Medical Center. He was born in
Naalehu, Hawaii. He is survived by wife Norma P., sons Arnold and
Victor Jr., brothers Herman and Edward, sisters Aileen Bringman and
Eleanor W. Chong, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass: 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Call after 11
